EP. 130: When Someone Else Gets Everything You Wanted with Lisa Whittle

Do you see that girl over there? The one that is constantly lingering in the back of your mind.
You know… the one with the perfect career, the perfect life, the perfect family.
Yes, I am talking about the metaphoric “her”!
We all have a version of “her” in our lives that the enemy dangles in front of us wanting us to succumb to envy, comparison, and self-doubt.
In a world riddled by jealousy, waiting, and loss, it is SO easy to struggle with seeing the good in our own lives, because we are too busy envying the good in ‘her’ life.
You see, the enemy has a way to make us doubt the very things we are supposed to lean into.
Even as my second book is about to enter the world in just a short couple of months (yay!), I STILL struggle with being ‘good enough’. With looking up from my lane to see who is ‘ahead’ of me, instead of focusing on the task at hand.
Friends, learning to value the character of who I am becoming over the ‘gold star’ is something that has taken me almost 40 years to learn… and, has not come easy.
So! It is for that reason that I am thrilled and honored to have my friend and best-selling author, Lisa Whittle, back on the podcast today to keep us honest!
Lisa does not mince words when she says:

“Hard things are a part of life. Yet, they don’t have to have the final word. They can become the keys to our greatest usability in the kingdom of God—that is, if we let God make good of them, rather than running away and refusing the growth we truly crave”.

Whoa. Just take a minute to let that sink in!
Have you ever run from hard things in your life? Perhaps there is something you are struggling with right this very minute.

If that is you, I want to encourage you to take Lisa’s profound advice to sit through the uncomfortable with Jesus rather than run away!
If you are wondering why on earth you would do that when it feels like everyone else has everything that you want, rest assured that:

“God wants to make much of your life! He has anointed and appointed you for a special purpose”.

Yes, friend… YOU! Not just ‘her’.
There is no one that is immune from the enemy’s sneaky strategies of comparison and jealousy. Not even Lisa herself!
In fact, Lisa opens up about her struggle with comparison and vulnerably admits that the narrative in her head of ‘I don’t like her’ and ‘She’s just not my type’ are actually just a cover for ‘I’m jealous of her’.
(Talk about a punch to the gut!)

So! How do we combat comparison in order to live a life of usability?

  1. Admit the truth to yourself and God – things kept in the dark cannot be addressed
  2. Combat jealousy with generosity – rather than let yourself stew, find a way to serve
  3. Stop making excuses – don’t just write off comparison as your competitive drive
  4. Shift your perspective – what if the person you envy is actually in your life for a specific reason

Seriously! My time with Lisa never disappoints! You are in for such an incredible conversation today where we also discuss:

  • How to find freedom from comparison and envy
  • The important difference between purpose and usability
  • Tips for showing up when you so desperately want to shut down
  • How to allow God to work in you during setbacks for bigger and better comebacks
  • Ways to shift the narrative from “what if” to “what is”

If you are ready to walk away equipped and motivated to weather whatever storm you face and come out on the other side stronger and more like the person God is shaping you to be, you will NOT want to miss today’s powerful episode!

I will leave you with this final quote from Lisa:
