EP. 128: Learning to Love Who God Made You to Be with Lauren Alaina

Are we fangirling a bit today? Why yes, yes we are.

When I was on vacation in Nantucket with Justin years ago, we decided to rent a Jeep and go on a drive to a lighthouse called Great Point. The drive to this lighthouse was beautiful, and it also felt very much in line with my life at the moment.

I was going through a time where I was really doubting myself and if I had it in me to continue on the journey of chasing my dream.

I was in the middle of pivoting my brand from being known as a ‘photographer’ to an ‘author.’ And while this was a brand pivot, it felt a lot more like an identity pivot.

I was trying to figure out who I was if I wasn’t a photographer.

We were going down a road less traveled — literally and figuratively in the moment — but I knew and believed there was something beautiful on the other side of this drive.

Have you ever been there?

A life transition – expected or not – will shake out all the loose ends of our identities, and what is left after this painful sifting process is stronger than what was there before — but it doesn’t always feel like that in the moment.

Well, it was during this specific trip, on that specific drive, that a song came on and it spoke right to that fragile heart of mine.

Some of the lyrics were:

“If you trust your rebel heart, ride it into battle. Don’t be afraid, take the road less traveled.”

What.

I mean — are there words that could have spoken to me any MORE in that moment? I think not.

Well, fast forward a couple of years — and I’m sitting across from the artist of that song– interviewing her and ask her all about her journey and that song. And the dear, sweet, gracious thing about this moment is that it only happened because I stayed true to myself and believed in myself to make that life pivot.

Had I not had enough belief in myself to make that pivot — I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interview the songwriter behind the song that means so much to me.

What a truly beautiful full circle moment.

So, here we go. Today on the Mary Marantz Show, we have on the one and only Multi-Platinum-selling singer-songwriter, Lauren Alaina.

Lauren Alaina was the runner up of American idol when she was only 15. She has since gone on to become a multi-platinum selling country, superstar winning the 2017 ACM New Female Vocalist of the Year Award, the CMT Breakthrough Video of the Year for Road Less Traveled and countless other CMT, CMA and billboard nominations.

And now! She is also the author of the brand new book, Getting Good at Being You: Learning to Love who God Made You to Be.

In our conversation, we get right into it — we are talking about:

  • How the world will try to change you,
  • How no goal will ever fill you, and
  • What it means to know and believe where your dream is headed even before anyone else can see it.

There was one thing (out of many!) that Lauren said during this conversation that really stood out to me. She said…

“…you don’t need a template or a blueprint to have success in your respective industry.”

This may seem simple and obvious as a stand alone statement, but in a world where we are inundated with comparison through Instagram, inspiration from Pinterest, and motivation from videos — it can be really difficult to create YOUR OWN blueprint for the path you want to take.

I find Lauren’s courage to push back on industry standards and pave an authentic path of her own extremely refreshing and inspiring.

If you find yourself beat down that the path paved for you to achieve your heart’s dream doesn’t feel authentic to you — this episode will give you the permission to follow your goal YOUR way.
